Cowden Protocol for Lyme Disease Treatment
The Cowden protocol was developed by Dr. William Lee Cowden, MD. He is a board cert. Cardiologist and internist. The protocol itself is a holistic and multifaceted approach to healing chronic Lyme through intense and powerful anti-microbials that address the three forms of Lyme (spirochetal, cyst-form and L-form). This is one of the more popular protocols since it is relatively cheap (around 300-500/month) and is self sustained.
Duration: The duration of this treatment, like most Lyme treatments is dependent on the severity of infection within the patient. Dr. Cowden suggests staying on the herbs until the patient feels better for at least two consecutive months. The majority of patients are on the protocol for six to twelve months.
Dr. Richard Horowitz, founder of ILADS and Lyme specialist actually utilizes the Cowden protocol frequently in his patients. After a six month study, he found that 70% of his patients who used Cowden remained well for months or years compared to 99% of his patients who relapsed after only treating with conventional antibiotics alone.
Unlike antibiotics, and some other herbal protocols, the Cowden protocol does require the patient to take several drops of tinctures in water 4-8 times a day. These dosings must be away from food and may taste bitter or unpleasant.
